Event Will Benefit Gene’s Dream Foundation, An Organization Founded By Kelly Tilghman To Help Improve The Lives of Children Through Golf
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Mentor Cup, an event that raises money for the Gene’s Dream Foundation, has secured a hall of fame celebrity commitment for its second annual tournament, which will be held October 26, 2019 at Tidewater Golf Club.
Golf legend Nancy Lopez, a 48-time winner on the LPGA Tour and a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, has committed to attend the 2019 Mentor Cup. The three-time major champion is planning to conduct a junior clinic and play in the Dream Challenge by Liberty Mutual, an 18-hole captain’s choice event.
“It’s a thrill to have Nancy Lopez support our foundation and its flagship tournaments,” said Kelly Tilghman, the driving force behind the Gene’s Dream Foundation. “She has always prioritized charitable endeavors and has so much to share with our area children as a Featured Mentor. We look forward to hearing about her most cherished lessons in golf and life.”
Tilghman founded the Mentor Cup and Gene’s Dream Foundation to honor the late Gene Weldon, a PGA pro who helped mentor countless kids during his nearly 50-year career along the Grand Strand.
The primary goal of the Gene’s Dream Foundation is to help improve the lives of children through golf. The foundation’s president, Wil Weldon, who is Gene’s son, has worked tirelessly to ensure the organization’s success in reaching children throughout the Grand Strand.
The inaugural Mentor Cup, which featured a comedic performance by David Feherty, led to a donation of $50,000 to the First Tee of the Coastal Carolinas.
This year’s Mentor Cup will be played the morning of October 26 with junior mentees being paired with adult mentors at Tidewater. The two-person teams will play nine holes of scramble and alternate shot competition.
Later that afternoon, 32, four-person teams will play in the Dream Challenge, an 18-hole captain’s choice event with team’s competing for luxury prizes and a chance to play in the finals of the Liberty Mutual Invitational at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course in the fall.
Entry fee for The Dream Challenge is $2,500 per team. Gifts and prizes feature the latest and greatest equipment and fashion from premier golf companies and are valued at more than $600 per golfer. All proceeds from the Mentor Cup and The Dream Challenge benefit Gene’s Dream Foundation, The First Tee of Coastal Carolinas and other area youth organizations.

Gene’s Dream Foundation was created in honor of the late Gene Weldon, a 40-year PGA Professional in the Carolinas PGA Section. Weldon was instrumental in the development and support of junior golf programs in the Myrtle Beach area. He was a mentor to many, including Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman and Charlie Rymer.
